Chopin Airport is where a large share of journeys to Ukraine begin, because flights into Ukraine remain suspended and Warsaw is the nearest big hub with direct trains and coaches across the border. This guide covers the rail and bus options from the airport, when to buy, and which hotel to choose if your train leaves in the evening or your coach at dawn.

The overnight train to Kyiv

Train 67/68 is the direct Warsaw to Kyiv service run by Ukrzaliznytsia with PKP Intercity. Westbound it leaves Warszawa Zachodnia at 6:40 pm and calls at Warszawa Centralna and Warszawa Wschodnia before running via Lublin and Chełm, crossing at Dorohusk to Kovel and reaching Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi at 10:45 am, a journey of about 15 hours in sleeping cars. Eastbound it leaves Kyiv in the evening and arrives at Warszawa Wschodnia in the morning. Times shift with each timetable change, so confirm on uz.gov.ua or intercity.pl before you plan around them.

Tickets are sold on the Ukrzaliznytsia app and site and by PKP Intercity. Ukrainian resellers report that sales open about 20 days ahead and that berths sell out within minutes on busy dates, so book the moment they open and keep the airport hotel refundable until you have them.

Via Przemyśl to Lviv, and via Chełm

For Lviv, the usual route is a PKP Intercity train from Warszawa Centralna or Wschodnia to Przemyśl Główny, about five to six hours, then a Ukrzaliznytsia train across the border to Lviv in around two hours, with several Intercity+ services a day continuing to Kyiv. Chełm, on the Kyiv train’s route, also has daytime cross-border trains to Kovel and Kyiv. Both need a change and both are worth checking against the direct train’s availability.

Coaches from the airport and Warszawa Zachodnia

The coach terminal in front of Terminal A’s south pier, on the arrivals level next to the railway exit, has 21 stands. The airport’s own list of operators includes Ecolines (with a Kyiv contact number), Pavluks Trans and ZESEN Trans, both Ukrainian companies, alongside FlixBus and Polish regional carriers. Coaches to Lviv take roughly 10 hours and to Kyiv 15 to 20 depending on the border, and most also call at Warszawa Zachodnia, Poland’s busiest coach station, which is four minutes from the airport on the SKM train. Buy online; on-board sales are the exception.

Getting from the airport to the stations

The SKM lines S2 and S3 from the station under the terminal call at Warszawa Zachodnia (coaches and the Kyiv train’s first stop), Warszawa Śródmieście (a short walk from Centralna) and Warszawa Wschodnia (the Kyiv train’s last Warsaw stop and the Przemyśl trains’ start), on a 75-minute ticket at 4.40 PLN. Where to sleep before the train

An evening train and a morning flight rarely line up, so most people sleep a night in Warsaw. For a flight that lands in the afternoon and a 6:40 pm train, you do not need a hotel at all. For a late arrival and a next-day train, the hotels by the terminal are the least effort: the Courtyard by Marriott Warsaw Airport is three minutes from the SKM platform, and the Renaissance Warsaw Airport Hotel, whose staff speak Ukrainian, five. On a budget, the Première Classe Warsaw Airport and ibis Styles Warszawa Airport are the cheapest beds near the airport, and the Airport Hotel Okęcie runs a 24-hour shuttle for an early coach. Passport control for Ukraine happens on the train at the border or at the coach crossing, and Polish exit checks apply on the way out. Keep documents to hand for the whole journey and allow extra hours at the road crossings on holiday weekends.
