What stays open at night

Terminal A is open 24 hours and the airport information desk (+48 22 650 42 20) answers around the clock. Because of noise limits there are almost no scheduled flights between roughly 11:30 pm and 5:30 am, so after the last arrivals the halls empty and stay empty until the first LOT check-ins open around 4:00 am. Cafés landside close one by one after the last departure; expect vending machines and little else between about midnight and 5:00 am. From the bus stops on the arrivals forecourt the night bus N32 runs to the centre all night.

Where to lie down

The airport’s official rest facilities are beyond security. The quiet room is two floors above Gate 33, reached by stairs, escalator or lift to level 2: a carpeted, dimly lit space with a pouffe, free, open 24 hours, meant for one person or a small group and for anyone who needs low stimulation. Soundproof armchairs with high backs and enclosed sides are spread through the restricted area in both the Schengen and non-Schengen zones, also free and first come, first served. Neither can be booked.

Landside, you are choosing between the benches in the check-in halls and the arrivals level. The check-in halls are the quieter option after midnight, but the seats have armrests and the lighting stays bright.

When the room is the better call

The landside night is the problem. If your flight is early and you can check in the evening before, or you hold a boarding pass for the morning, you can go through security and use the armchairs; if you cannot, you are on a bench until 4:00 am. The Courtyard by Marriott Warsaw Airport is a three-minute walk from the terminal door, the Renaissance Warsaw Airport Hotel five minutes, and the Airport Hotel Okęcie runs its free shuttle 24 hours, so a late arrival is not stuck. For the lowest price close in, the Première Classe Warsaw Airport is one bus stop away, though the buses stop overnight; take a taxi for about 20 to 30 PLN.

Arriving late and leaving early is the classic case: a room at the Courtyard or Renaissance means a shower and six hours flat, and the walk back is shorter than the queue you would join at security. A connection of four hours or less at 2:00 am is the one time the terminal beats the hotel, and even then the armchairs are only useful if you are already through.

If you do stay in the terminal

Keep your bag as your pillow, charge devices at the sockets built into the seating near the gates, and use the free drinking-water fountains. The airport’s pharmacy, currency exchange and left-luggage service have daytime hours; do not count on them after midnight. Sleeping in the arrivals hall is tolerated but noisier once the first shuttles and taxis start moving around 5:00 am.
